V. Recent Experiments 2013 — Present

Vibrant colours make a strong comeback in Matsutani’s recent works, in a striking contrast with the ongoing black and white Stream series.

Recent Works

From the 2010s, particularly from 2017, Matsutani makes a bold use of colour (green, yellow, blue…). But he remains faithful to graphite, creating monumental installations such as Stream-Venice for the 2017 Venice Biennale, or Stream-Pompidou for his major retrospective exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, in 2019.

Starting in 2013-14 Matsutani began revisiting his earlier intense and joyous palette and rounding the formats of his green, yellow and blue canvases swollen with blisters in a veritable explosion of jubilance. This renewed youthfulness noted by his friend Tadao Ando constitutes the climax of a body of work that entered into resilience early on and rather than weakening has culminated in a “crazy wisdom”
